Silky Eyes - Puro Instinct
As the album cover suggests, Puro Instinct’s Headbangers in Ecstacy is a collection of lush, downright feminine dream pop songs organized in the format of an 80’s alternative radio program; it is soft, silky smooth music made for lounging around, and it is in this aspect that this record succeeds. Hazy synths and guitars glide over your head whilst singer Piper Kaplan sings lazily about trivial, meaningless things. There is an air of naivety to her singing, like a young teenage girl who is innocent but all too curious; however, in my opinion the vocals leave a little to be desired, but I guess that only adds to the effect!
Hello and thank you! I just viewed your music blog - lots of similar tastes here. :> You have great taste in music yourself!
Glide - The Soundcarriers
The world of The Soundcarriers is one filled with psychedelic twists and turns, taking the soul on a wondrous journey through the free-wheeling musical explorations that push the boundaries of rock music, à la Stereolab and Broadcast. Their unique music pulls from the best qualities of several genres of music: the grooves and rhythmic drive of krautrock, the East Asian spirituality of the 60’s psychedelic movement, and the jazzy, long, well-structured songs most associated with progressive rockers. Indeed, it is as great as it sounds; not once do The Soundcarriers falter in maintaining their excellent musicality, and the vast influences that they pull from gives them an ambiguous, genre-defying sound that is simply to die for.

Makes No Sense - Soundpool
This song really clicks with me. Although I cannot understand a word she is sings, the way she sings hits me deep. It’s sort of like that cute girl at the party that you danced hard with and never saw again; you had the time of your life without knowing what the hell exactly happened. I also feel that the marriage of disco and shoegazing in this song is essentially surrealist; the song bobs along in disco fashion with an air of musty melancholy, while the guitar tones ooze out of both sides of the mix in a blurry, messy haze - surreal.

Sons of the Silent Age - David Bowie
I don’t know what I like the most about this song; it has way too much brilliance packed into its 3 minutes. The vocal performance - the way he switches from a conversational tone during the verse to the passionate, bluesy chorus - is breathtakingly stunning. The lyrics are some of the best Mr. Bowie has ever written (Make love only once but dream and dream / Don’t walk, they just glide in and out of life / They never die, they just go to sleep one day), and the arrangement is well-structured and powerful. This song is a timeless classic.
Stranded in Greenland - For Against
I’ve been obsessing over this group for the past few days now. It sounds a little like Joy Division mixed with dreamy guitars reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins and Ian Masters from Pale Saint’s charming boyish vocals. What a great sound!
Satin Safe - Chapterhouse
The intense, noisy guitars under the octave-doubled vocals. The sharp dissonance juxtaposed with the dreamy, ethereal vocals. The distinct tempo change in between sections. The dark, morbid lyrics. This song is perfect.
Black Forest - Takako Minekawa
This song sends nostalgic chills down my back; the whole video game music vibe that I am getting makes me recall my younger days, when all of my free time was devoted to video games and the only thing I had to worry about was hygiene and when the next meal was. It’s a very calming song, yet eerily so. Very childish and naive - a black forest made of cardboard, dark and ominous, with strange little creatures wondering about. Strange, unique pop music.
